Some salads are polite. This one is confident. This Honey Mustard Chicken Salad brings together juicy, pan-seared chicken, crispy bacon, creamy avocado, and a bold honey mustard salad dressing that pulls double duty as both marinade and drizzle. It hits that sweet spot between fresh and filling, which is exactly why this honey chicken salad never feels like a compromise.
What makes it even better is how easy it is to throw together without losing that “wow” factor. This honey mustard chicken salad recipe works just as well for busy weeknights as it does for laid-back lunches when you still want something that feels intentional.

What Makes This Recipe Work
- The dressing does the heavy lifting: Using the honey mustard salad dressing as both a marinade and finishing sauce means the chicken is seasoned all the way through, not just coated at the end.
- Big texture energy: You get crisp bacon, juicy chicken, creamy avocado, and fresh greens all in one bowl, so every bite stays interesting.
- Balanced, not boring: Sweet honey, tangy mustard, savoury chicken, and smoky bacon keep this honey chicken salad from leaning too far in any one direction.
- Actually filling: This is a salad that eats like a proper meal, not a side pretending to be dinner. If you love hearty, protein-packed bowls like this, you’ll also want to try our lemon quinoa balsamic chicken salad for another satisfying option.
What Goes Into Honey Mustard Chicken Salad

What makes this honey mustard chicken salad recipe shine is the balance of simple, fresh ingredients paired with a bold, tangy-sweet dressing that doubles as a marinade.
- Honey: The natural sweetness in the honey blends beautifully with the mustards, giving the dressing its signature flavor.
- Whole Grain & Dijon Mustard: Using both adds layers of taste; the whole grain gives texture and punch, while Dijon brings smooth, mild sharpness.
- Chicken Thighs or Breasts: Juicy and tender once marinated, the chicken becomes the star of the salad, carrying that honey mustard flavor through every bite.
- Avocado: Creamy slices of avocado add richness that balances the tangy dressing and crisp vegetables.
Note: Please see recipe card at the bottom for a full list of ingredients with measurements.
Want To Make It Extra? Go On Then
If you feel like switching things up without losing the soul of the recipe, try one of these:
- Grilled Peaches or Mango Slices: Add juicy sweetness that pairs beautifully with the tangy honey mustard and makes the salad feel extra special.
- Crumbled Feta or Goat Cheese: Brings a salty, creamy contrast that cuts through the sweetness and rounds everything out.
- Roasted Chickpeas: Adds serious crunch and a plant-forward boost without overpowering the rest of the salad.
- Thinly Sliced Apples or Pears: Lends fresh sweetness and crisp bite that keeps the salad light and balanced.
How To Make Honey Mustard Chicken Salad

- Make Dressing and Marinade: Whisk honey, whole grain mustard, Dijon, olive oil, vinegar, garlic, and salt. Reserve half and refrigerate, then marinate chicken in the rest.

- Cook the Chicken: Heat a nonstick or grill pan over medium with a little oil. Sear chicken on both sides until golden and cooked through, then let it rest.

- Crisp the Bacon: Wipe the pan and add a touch more oil. Fry the diced bacon until crispy, then set aside.

- Prep Salad Base: Arrange romaine, tomatoes, avocado, corn, and onion in a bowl or platter.

- Slice and Add the Chicken: Slice the rested chicken into strips. Place over the salad so every serving gets plenty of protein.

- Dress and Finish: Whisk 2 tablespoons water into the honey mustard dressing. Drizzle, scatter the bacon, season, and serve.
If you’d like to make this honey mustard chicken salad recipe part of a larger meal, pair it with something cozy like Creamy Beef Stroganoff With Mushrooms. The rich, velvety sauce complements the sweet and tangy salad flavors, creating a balanced spread that’s both hearty and fresh.
For lighter but equally satisfying options, try Slow Cooker Mediterranean Chicken or Grilled Chicken Caprese With Buffalo Mozzarella. Both bring vibrant, savory flavors that play beautifully with the crisp veggies and honey mustard salad dressing, making them the perfect companions for your honey chicken salad.
Tips For Getting This Salad Just Right
- Let the chicken rest before slicing: This keeps it juicy and stops the salad from getting watery.
- Thin the dressing if needed: A small splash of water helps the honey mustard salad dressing coat everything evenly.
- Dress right before serving: Crisp greens are non-negotiable.
- Warm chicken, cool salad: That contrast is what makes this honey mustard chicken salad recipe feel extra satisfying.

This is the first recipe that I’ve tried from you. It was delicious and I will make it again. It was a gorgeous salad and I got rave reviews. Next time, I will reduce the amount of honey as I found it to be too sweet for my taste.
This was a delicious and easy weeknight meal! Both my husband (not a salad lover) and I loved it!
We made this for dinner tonight and it was delicious! My husband suggested we add some of the bacon drippings into the dressing and I’m so glad I let him persuade me. It was so, so good! I figure the salad part cancels out the bacon part!
Just found your website! This salad looks delicious. I’ve been making a lot of salads lately and always make my own dressing. I have a question about the marinade /dressing, does the bacon (I’m assuming cooked) go in the dressing or does it go on the salad?
Thanks and happy cooking!
Hi Christi, no the bacon is fried separately and then added to the salad, not the dressing 🙂 I hope you enjoy this salad! It’s been quite popular!
This looks so good!
Does the bacon go into the dressing or the salad? Looking at the pics of dressing I don’t see bacon in it but I do see bacon in the salad. It’s under the dressing section of the recipe though, so I’m not sure. thanks!!
Hi Becca, No it goes in separately 😉
Could you clarify the mustards you’re referring to in this recipe, please. I’m somewhat confused as to what exactly you’re talking about ex: whole grain, mustard. 2 tablespoons mild plus smooth Dijon mustard. Are these two measurements for two different types of mustards in addition to a whole grain? I’m only familiar with the normal yellow mustartd and am really not sure the other types of mustard you’re referring to.
Hi Lori. Yes these are two different types of mustards. If you google both types (whole grain mustard and Dijon mustard), images will pop up of what they look like to help you find them, and sometimes it shows you where in your area you can find them (or what stores).
I made this last night and it was really good! Husband loved it too. Thanks for another easy and healthy recipe!
Is whole grain mustard just normal mustard as opposed to dijon?
Hi Stacie! Whole grain mustard has seeds in it. Similar in taste to a Dijon but nicer!
Dear Karina
I’m a novice cook, so I need a bit more direction. In the marinade recipe, you call for bacon. I see in the comments that it is 1/4 CUP, so that part of my question is answered, but is it COOKED bacon? Thank you for your recipes.
I just found your blog, and will be relying on your expertise for a long, long time. Thank you so much
Any way to make the marinade a little less sweet? I have extra that I’d like to use for a dressing, but it’s a little sweet for my taste. Should I add more mustard? Vinegar?
Hi Amanda. Yes you can add a little more oil to dilute the sweetness or a couple tablespoons of water.
