What Goes Into Chocolate Waffles
Making Chocolate Waffles doesn’t require anything fancy, just a handful of pantry staples that transform into something rich and indulgent.
- All Purpose Flour: The foundation of the batter, providing structure while keeping the waffles light and tender.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: Delivers that unmistakable chocolate flavor, turning these waffles into a true chocolate lovers’ dream.
- Brown Sugar: Adds just the right amount of sweetness while also bringing a subtle caramel note that deepens the overall flavor.
- Eggs: Help bind the batter together and create a fluffy, cake-like texture that makes these waffles so satisfying.
Note: Please see recipe card at the bottom for a full list of ingredients with measurements.
How To Make Chocolate Waffles
- Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
- Combine the Wet Ingredients: Make a well in the center of the mix, then add eggs, oil or melted butter, and milk, gently whisking to bring everything together.
- Form the Batter: Stir the wet and dry ingredients until the batter is smooth and lump-free, being careful not to overmix so the waffles stay fluffy.
- Cook the Waffles: Preheat your waffle iron and cook the batter according to the manufacturer’s instructions until golden, crisp on the outside, and fluffy inside.
- Prepare the Ganache: For a Nutella ganache, melt 1/4 cup of Nutella in the microwave for 30–60 seconds, then beat in 3–4 tablespoons of milk until smooth.
- Serve and Enjoy: Plate the warm chocolate waffles with a dusting of powdered sugar or sweetener, and drizzle generously with melted Nutella or ganache.
For an indulgent breakfast spread, pair these Chocolate Waffles with Caramelized Fig Toasted Oatmeal. The warm, jammy figs add a natural sweetness and a touch of elegance, balancing the deep cocoa flavor in the waffles. It’s a combination that feels special yet comforting.
To round out dessert or a brunch table, try Coconut Cream Pie Waffles for a playful double-waffle theme or go tropical with a refreshing Pineapple Rum Punch on the side. Both options highlight the indulgence of cake waffles in unexpected ways, making your spread stand out from the ordinary.

Fresh berries, whipped cream, Nutella, caramel sauce, or even a scoop of ice cream make decadent toppings for these waffles.

I made these chocolate waffles today. What a good recipe. The batter smelled great even before the waffles were made. I filled the machine with 1/2 c of batter and chose to add chocolate chips to each waffle. I did some with semi-sweet chips and made some with espresso chocolate chips. My Cuisinart waffle iron makes one 7″ waffle every 1.5 minutes. This recipe made 8 waffles. Dad was here and he said he didn’t think he’d care for a chocolate waffle. He tested it and pronounced it “very good”.
Hubby suggested chocolate waffles for supper tonight and I found your recipe. I added some chopped walnuts after pouring the batter in the waffle iron, and sliced strawberries to serve on the side. Delicious!!! We will be adding this to the “keep” list and having these again. Other recipes look yummy, too. Thanks.

You are a very nice mom! My kids eat cereal, toast or porridge for breakfast. That is it. I cook all lunches and dinners. Breakfast – God help you, children. And man hunger is the driving force. They come up with frozen fruit on top of their porridge, eggs etc. ideas.
