Some nights call for effort. Others call for throwing chicken in a pan, drowning it in sauce, and letting the oven do the work. This Barbecue Chicken lands firmly in the second category and tastes far better than it has any right to for such a short ingredient list.

This is the kind of chicken barbecue you make when time is tight but expectations are high. The sauce turns glossy, the chicken stays juicy, and every bite hits that sweet smoky savoury balance that keeps people hovering near the oven asking when dinner’s ready.

Oven Baked Barbecue Soy Chicken Drumsticks Baked in a 3 ingredient sauce packed with so much flavour,

What Makes This Recipe So Good

This Barbecue Chicken keeps things simple without sacrificing flavour, which is exactly why it works so well.

  • The combination of barbecue sauce and soy sauce delivers instant depth without needing a long marinade or complicated spice blends
  • Baking first keeps the chicken juicy while letting the sauce soak into every crevice
  • A final blast of heat caramelises the sauce into that sticky glaze everyone fights over
  • It works beautifully with drumsticks, thighs, wings, or whatever chicken you have on hand

This soy barbecue chicken proves that fewer ingredients can still mean big flavour when they are used properly.

This Barbecue Chicken recipe keeps things wonderfully simple with just a few pantry staples. Each one plays a big role in building that sticky, savory-sweet glaze you’ll want to lick off your fingers.

  • Chicken Drumsticks: Juicy and tender, drumsticks are perfect for holding onto all that rich barbecue soy glaze.
  • Barbecue Sauce: The base of the recipe, giving you smoky-sweet flavor and that irresistible caramelized finish.
  • Soy Sauce: Adds salty depth and umami, turning this into a richer soy barbecue chicken than your usual version.
  • Garlic: Fresh or powdered, it brings a punch of flavor that balances the sweetness and makes the sauce shine.

Note: Please see recipe card at the bottom for a full list of ingredients with measurements.

Add Ins And Smart Swaps

If you want to play around without ruining the simplicity, these options work beautifully.

  • Honey Or Maple Syrup: Adds extra gloss and sweetness if your BBQ sauce leans smoky or sharp.
  • Chilli Flakes Or Sriracha: Perfect if you like a little heat with your BBQ chicken.
  • Garlic Or Ginger: Fresh or powdered both work for an extra layer of flavour.
  • Sesame Oil: Just a small drizzle for subtle nuttiness that pairs well with soy.

How To Make Barbecue Chicken

Set your oven to 430°F (220°C).
  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 430°F (220°C) and lightly grease a baking dish to prepare for the drumsticks.

Switch the oven to broil on medium heat, uncover the chicken, and broil until the tops are golden brown.
  1. Broil Until Golden: Switch the oven to broil on medium heat, uncover the chicken, and broil until the tops are golden brown.
Turn the drumsticks and broil the other side until browned and serve with rice, potatoes or vegetables.
  1. Flip and Finish: Turn the drumsticks and broil the other side until browned, then serve hot with rice, potatoes, or vegetables.

For a cozy pairing, serve this juicy Barbecue Chicken with a bowl of Creamy Roasted Tomato Basil Soup, which adds a velvety and tangy balance to the smoky-sweet glaze. On the side, add Spaghetti Squash Lasagna Boats, a lighter yet comforting dish layered with cheesy, tomato goodness. To finish the spread, serve Crispy Garlic Butter Parmesan Smashed Potatoes, a golden, crunchy side that pairs beautifully with the sticky glaze of the chicken.

Pro Tips For Saucy Success

  • Pat the chicken dry before adding the sauce so it sticks better and caramelises properly
  • Line the baking dish with foil or baking paper to make clean up painless
  • Do not rush the final uncovered bake since that is where the sauce thickens and turns glossy
  • Spoon the pan juices over the chicken before serving for maximum flavour

Can I Make This Recipe Spicy?

Definitely. Add a little chili paste, sriracha, or crushed red pepper flakes into the sauce for a spicy kick.

Can you assemble ahead and bake later?

    1. Georgia Knowles says:

You could definitely leave the chicken in the sauces to marinate for a few hours and cook same day or overnight to cook next morning. This recipe is really quick an easy to throw together, only 5 minutes prep time!
