Smoked Salmon and Avocado Grilled Cheese is a quick and easy, yet decadent lunch for people on the go! A toasted sandwich with salmon, avocado and TWO different types of cheeses will satiate all of your grilled cheese cravings in minutes.
The smoked salmon and avocado grilled cheese is similar to your traditional grilled cheese sandwich but fancified. With rich, smoked salmon, avocado and mozzarella cheese stuffed between two crispy pieces of bread, you’ll never want a regular grilled cheese again!
If you’ve tried our smoked salmon and avocado pizza and our salmon and avocado caesar salad, you’ll probably agree that salmon and avocado is a criminally underrated pairing! The rich, creaminess of the avocado and the smokiness of the salmon pair perfectly. Elevated by the dill and chives, you’re left with a mouthful of flavour in every bite. I guess you won’t know until you’ve given our smoked salmon and avocado grilled cheese a go!
HOW TO MAKE THE BEST GRILLED CHEESE
There are a number of little things that make up the perfect grilled cheese sandwich. The most obvious being cheese, cheese and more cheese! When you bite into your grilled cheese, you want rivers of melted cheese to erupt from your sandwich. Just make sure to let that cheese cool slightly before biting into your grilled cheese – no-one wants a mouthful of cheesy lava!
You also want to make sure you’re purchasing good quality mozzarella, not the pre-grated kind. Pre-grated mozzarella is coated in starch to help preserve the cheese, while fresh shredded mozzarella has a smoother consistency and melts more effectively. This will give you that thick, lava-like appearance.
The second, but equally as important component to keep in mind is the bread. Good quality bread is a must! We believe sourdough is the best bread for grilled cheese, alternatively, feel free to use a couple of slices of artisan bread.
SALMON
You don’t want to lose the deep, smoky undertones of the salmon! That’s why we like to pack a fair amount of salmon into our grilled cheese! While we enjoy a thick piece of salmon in our Creamy Garlic Butter Tuscan Salmon and our Easy Honey Garlic Salmon, this recipe calls for thin slithers of rich smoked salmon.
SMOKED SALMON AND AVOCADO GRILLED CHEESE
A regular grilled cheese is undeniably good, but why settle for good when you could have delicious? We like to throw our own spin on the classics, like our Caprese Grilled Cheese and our Spinach and Ricotta Grilled Cheese but this smoked salmon and avocado grilled cheese recipe has to be one of our favourites.
This recipe is so easy to throw together and for something so full of flavour, is surprisingly low in calories! All you’re going to need is:
- 2 slices of bread (I prefer sourdough for extra flavour and chewiness)
- Fresh mozzarella
- Cream cheese (low fat for low calorie)
- Avocado
- Smoked salmon (from the supermarket or your local fish market)
- Dill
- Chives (optional)
Mix some chopped dill and chives (optional) into your cream cheese. Spread a thick layer across both slices of bread. Stack your salmon, avocado and mozzarella onto your bread. Make sure the outside of the sandwich is buttered before placing it into the hot, greased pan. In under ten minutes, you’ll have yourself the best, fancy grilled cheese you’ve ever tried!

Smoked Salmon & Avocado Grilled Cheese
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons low fat cream cheese
- 1 teaspoon fresh dill
- 1 teaspoon chopped chives (optional)
- 2 slices sourdough (or preferred bread)
- ¼ large avocado sliced
- 4 slices smoked salmon
- 4 tablespoons fresh shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1-2 teaspoons cooking oil (I love using avocado oil)
Instructions
- Prepare bread: Butter one side of each of the bread slices. Set aside.
- Combine the cream cheese with dill and chives in a small bowl.
- Flip the bread buttered-side down and spread the cream cheese mixture onto the un-buttered side of each piece. Add the smoked salmon and avocado slices. Top with the mozzarella cheese and a piece of bread, buttered-side up. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Repeat for the remaining sandwich.
- Heat oil in a skillet or nonstick pan over medium heat. Fry the sandwiches on both sides until golden, the sandwich is warmed through and the cheese has melted.
Notes
- Use fresh mozzarella rather than bagged mozzarella.Â
- Butter on the bread and olive oil on the pan is the secret to perfect, golden bread.Â
