A flatlay image of labeled guacamole ingredients in small bowls arranged on a light surface. Visible ingredients include chopped red onion, diced tomato, green chile, chopped cilantro, salt, cracked black pepper, lime juice, lemon juice, and three halved ripe avocados in the center.

This simple guacamole recipe uses only a handful of fresh ingredients, but the flavors shine through beautifully.

  • Ripe Avocados: The heart of any great guacamole, ripe avocados provide that signature creamy texture and rich flavor.
  • Red Onion: Finely chopped red onion adds a pop of color and a subtle bite that balances the richness of the avocado.
  • Serrano or Jalapeño Chiles: A small amount of chile gives this guacamole its mild kick. Use more or less depending on your spice preference.
  • Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice brightens the flavors and helps prevent the avocados from browning.

Note: Please see the recipe card at the bottom for a full list of ingredients with measurements.

How To Make Guacamole

  1. Mash the aromatics: On a cutting board or in a mortar and pestle, mash the red onion, chile, salt, and half the cilantro with a fork until fragrant and juicy. This releases flavor and forms the base of the guacamole.
  1. Combine and finish: Transfer the mixture to a bowl. Add the avocados, remaining cilantro, lime juice, black pepper, and mash to your desired texture. Stir in the tomato, taste, and adjust seasoning as needed.

This creamy guacamole is endlessly versatile and pairs perfectly with so many favorites. Fried Tortilla Chips are the classic choice: golden, crisp, and perfect for scooping up every bite.

If you’re looking for something different, try it alongside Crispy Fries for a fun twist, or spread it over warm Flour Tortillas as a flavorful base for wraps and tacos.

Recipe FAQ’s

How Long Does Guacamole Last?

Guacamole will keep for up to 2 days in an airtight container without turning brown. For best results, cover the surface with a thin layer of oil before sealing and refrigerating. To serve, pour off any liquid, stir, and add a touch of lime juice to freshen it up.

What’s the Best Way to Mash Avocados?

Use a fork for a chunkier texture or a mortar and pestle for something smoother. A potato masher also works well if making a larger batch.

Is Lemon Juice Necessary If I’m Using Lime?

Lime juice is the star here, but a splash of lemon adds a subtle brightness. You can use one or both, depending on your taste.
